2 Chronicles 7:14 – KJV – If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
Seeking is different than praying: it is getting down and dirty with God. When we pray, we are asking for what we want. When we are seeking, we are asking God what He wants. The kind of answer we are looking for when we are seeking Him is “How can I change to be more like you?” It is very significant that “seeking Him” is placed right before “turn from your wicked ways” in 2nd Corinthians 7:14. When we seek Him, he will tell us what wicked ways are in us so we can turn from them. Here is an example of the types of prayers we pray when we are in seeker mode:
Psalms 139:23 – 24 KJV – Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
The word for search means: to examine thoroughly. This is seeking God. People who want to hide the wickedness that is in their heart will not seek after God. They do not want to change and they do not want anything revealed.
Psalm 10:4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.
Here is a sad truth: We were not seeking after God. We were all born in sin and did not understand that we should be seeking His will. We were in rebellion to Him.
Psalms 53:2 -3 KJV – God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God. Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
God saw our situation and loved us anyway.
Romans 5:8 – KJV – But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
So why do we need to change? Because we have backslid as a church and we are not showing the world the true nature of Christ.
Jeremiah 3:22 – KJV – Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God.
Isaiah 55:6, 7 – KJV – Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
Now is the time for us to seek God for revival. When we do this He will change us into His image and we will become a shining light to the world. This is the main thing that happens when we seek God: we are changed. Not that we become more saved, we are transformed into powerful witnesses that can preach His gospel with power. This is the power of seeking Him. We become more like Him as we behold His glory in our prayer closet:
2 Corinthians 3:18 – KJV – But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
