GOD’S CORPORAL PUNISHMENT

There’s been talk lately against corporal punishment on children. It started in the 60s and 70s with the free love movement. Now with a second generation being affected by this, we are seeing the results of this experiment on our daily news. Even Christians are being taken in by this lie from the devil. God has given us instructions in his word how we are to perform corporal punishment.

Now, I am not talking about child abuse. We are to perform corporal punishment on our children exactly the way God performs it on his children: with love. There is a teaching making the rounds that we are covered by grace  and God never makes us feel bad about anything. If that were the case,  we would not have this admonition from Hebrews chapter 12:

Hebrews 12:5 – 8 NAS – and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons, “MY SON DO NOT REGARD LIGHTLY THE DISCIPLINE OF THE LORD, NOR FAINT WHEN YOU ARE REPROVED BY HIM FOR THOSE WHOM THE LORD LOVES HE DISCIPLINES, AND HE SCOURGES EVERY SON WHOM HE RECEIVES.” It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

These verses state clearly that if you never feel conviction in your heart from sins that you commit, then you are not even saved. God will never let his children continue in sin without bringing discipline to their life.

 And when God disciplines us, this is not a pleasant experience according to verse 12 :

Hebrews 12:11 – NAS – All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

  When we are washed in the blood of Jesus,  we are set free from the punishment of sin . We are not held guilty any longer, But that is not what we’re talking about here. After we are saved, when we sin, it  breaks fellowship with God according to first John chapter 1:

1 John 1:6 – NAS – If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;

1 John 1:9 – 10 NAS – If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.

 This is the remedy the God has given us when fellowship with Him is broken through sin . I am so glad that he will forgive our sins when we confess them . The next verse says that if we are constantly saying that we have not sinned when fellowship is broken with God,  then we make him to be a liar.  That is the fallacy of the teaching that is making the rounds today. It says that any type of “guilt” that we feel , is from the devil and not from God.  If taken to the extreme, this will cause us to not confess our sins so that he can forgive us . It is not guilt that you feel,  it is the discipline of the Lord.  You should rejoice that you are being treated as a son.  Be sure to take the steps necessary to clear this up between you and God and get back to living a victorious life.
