Being thankful has to do with so much more than just being grateful. When we are thankful, it sets off a humility in our hearts that is acceptable to God. It puts us in our proper place when we do not feel that we are entitled to his blessings, but we are given them by His grace. Consider this verse:
Hebrews 12:28 – Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe,
Our degree of thankfulness affects how we worship. And, as this verse seems to indicate, there is an acceptable way to worship God: with reverence and awe. We would do well to worship him this way in light of the next verse:
Hebrews 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire.
Being thankful takes effort according to this verse:
Colossians 4:2 – Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.
We must devote ourselves to it. As we are mindful of being thankful, the peace of God will rule in our hearts.
Colossians 3:15 – Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.
Since we are already thinking of thankfulness this week, let’s work on our altitude of thankfulness that will last all year. It should be so ingrained in us that it becomes part of our makeup. Practice thankfulness all year, worship God acceptably and let His peace rule your heart as you put yourself and God each in the proper place.
