Let’s continue with our study of an open heaven. Our prayers will be answered so quickly that we will sometimes forget to be humble. I do not mean the regular prayers for guidance, wisdom, blessing, etc. that we pray in our morning devotions will be answered, I mean, just as Jesus said, “whatsoever you shall ask in my name, I will do it”.
When this occurs, we have to be careful what we ask for. We must be mature enough to know what God’s will is and only ask for those things that are good for all concerned: Not just for “my 4 and no more.” Because, remember, under an open heaven, you are going to get whatever you ask for.
Luke 9:53 – 55 But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem. And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?” But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of.
You will notice in this story of Jesus going through Samaria that the Samaritans did not receive Him because he was going to Jerusalem. Suddenly the disciples come up with a brilliant idea: wipe them out! In their immaturity they were ready to pray for a miracle (and used scripture to back up their desire to do it) to accomplish this.
Now, if you notice Jesus’ answer to them was not, “oh, you can’t do that. Those type of miracles died along with Elijah.” Jesus stopped them because they actually could have done it. Then He addressed the bigger issue: Their revengeful spirit. During an open heaven, our spirits must die to the God’s will so we will not ask for things that are self-serving and hurtful of others.
This takes special wisdom from God. The dying process occurs during our prayers for revival and this is why we must prepare ourselves. The disciples finally came to one mind and one accord after 10 days of praying in the upper room. (Acts 2). That is why we are instructed in 2 Chronicles 7:14 to humble ourselves, pray, seek his face, turn from our wicked ways. In a future blog, we may go into each of these separately to see how important each one is to generate an open heaven.
But remember, under an open heaven, you will get anything you pray for. So do not use God as a vending machine. Learn now to ask things according to His will, not your will.
1 John 5:14 – 15 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.
